Who needs the 4 hours
Anyone renewing a license to practice cosmetology, a branch of cosmetology, or an instructor license. Boutique service registrations follow the same 4-hour split for 2025-2027. One course can cover more than one license: the Board says both the Laws and Rules hour and the infection-control hours apply to multiple licenses.
The 1-hour Board Laws and Rules course is free and only provided by the Board, on CE Broker. 1StopCEUs does not offer that hour. Our course is the 3-hour Infection Control and Safety class. Infection control course.
When it is due
For the 2025-2027 period, all CE hours must be completed by January 15, 2027. If the hours are not done by that date, the Board says you cannot finish the renewal until February 1, 2027 or after, when the next CE courses become available.
The license itself must be renewed by January 31, 2027. A late fee applies after that date. The renewal fee is paid to the Board through eLicense. It is separate from the course price.
How to renew
- Check whether you are exempt. Read the exemption rules.
- Complete the free 1-hour Laws and Rules course on CE Broker, and a Board-approved 3-hour Infection Control and Safety course. The Board requires providers to report completion to CE Broker within 10 business days. Keep your certificate. The Board may ask for it in an audit, and you should not email it to the Board.
- Renew and pay at elicense.ohio.gov. If the hours are not marked complete in CE Broker, eLicense will not let you finish the renewal.
Cosmetology, branch of cosmetology, and tanning business licenses renew by January 31 of each odd-numbered year. The Board's business renewal instructions do not list a CE hour requirement for the business license itself.
